School meals changed and unhealthy snacks scrapped

Chips phased out:

Along with other unhealthy foods rich in saturated fat, french fries and chips have been gradually phased out and ultimately been removed from the lunch menu and replaced with a much broader variety of healthy options.

Vending changes:

Fizzy drinks machines have been removed from the school grounds and replaced with much healthier options, such as water, natural juices and non-carbonated still drinks.

Confectionary, snacks and crisps are no longer sold in school through any of the vending machines on campus or from the canteen itself.
This is also true of the Heworth Grange City Learning Centre.

The canteen
have replaced the tuck shop sweets and chocolate products with more healthy variations of snacks and some very tempting, but equally healthy, tray bakes.

Science-tific
study:

The science department at Heworth actioned research into and a short term study of how replacing fizzy carbonated, sugary drinks with water affected pupils concentration levels and behaviour.

By means of this mini study in the school and further research, they concluded that replacing sugary drinks before lessons with pure water meant that instead of a short burst of energy and attention span, a longer sustained level of energy and concentration was achieved.
The science department recommended the best drinks to be promoted were un-flavoured waters drank at room temperature, no colder than this.
