Community Access and ICT:
Heworth Grange CLC run a number of courses
for which members of the community can enrol.
These courses are held in the evening.
Computers for Beginners - ACL-NLDC
Computers for Improvers – E Citizen
Photoshop (Digital Photography) British
Computer Society Certificate
Family tree using the Internet
Internet access is available for the community
as part of the above courses.
Family Learning Computer courses have been
advertised. (Figures not available as yet)
ECDL (European Computer Drivers Licence
Level 1 and Level 2
The school welcomes a number of organisations
to use the school premises after school
and at weekends
Aerobics classes take place
on Tuesday and Thursday 6-7pm
Heworth Basketball club 3.30
– 7.30 local secondary and primary
schools boys and girls with weekend matches
organised by Newcastle Eagles in the community.
The sport facilities are used
every evening by a number of youth football
teams including Felling Magpies and Leam
Rangers.
Creative & Performing Arts
Activities
The school hosts Heworth Grange Youth Theatre.
Pupils past (up to the age of 25) and present
come together after school to rehearse and
perform various productions throughout the
year. The productions range from Broadway
musicals to pantomime. Pupils also engage
themselves in Dance projects outside of
school time.
The pupil’s interest in music has
increased so much in recent years that regular
lessons, rehearsals and concerts take place
after school on most evenings.

The CPA department has recently invited
the community to take part in the 18+ RADA
Shakespeare Certificate. This involves participation
throughout the year for approximately 2
hours per week and culminates in a practical
examination.
Parenting Support
and Family Learning
The school-learning mentors
working in association with key pastoral
staff offers support to those families requiring
it.
Pupils are normally referred to Learning
Mentors by Pastoral staff. 1 to 1 work is
undertaken with pupils but contact is established
with many parents, some of who make direct
referrals. Contact is maintained by telephone.
School visits and home visits. Learning
Mentors are flexible and often arrange meetings
during unsociable hours.
Extra Activities
After discussion with pupils, learning mentors
will arrange with departments to see if
hobbies and interests can be facilitated.

5.45pm.
Festivals:
The school also enters teams in annual dance
festival/gymnastics festival – performances
continue on those occasions until approximately
9:00pm
Young Sports Leaders and Volunteering
A number of students in Year 9, Year 10
and Year 11 get involved in sports leadership
opportunities. Primary school tournaments
and festivals require helpers, scorers,
marshals, and activity leaders. The number
of pupils becoming involved in these activities
with younger pupils is on the increase.
Extra sporting activities:
Where facility sharing takes place, e.g.
local cricket club used for practices or
matches students are becoming involved in
club-based activities. The local basketball
club using school facility has encouraged
a number of students to join the club.
