2006 sees another year of support for learning at heworth.
The learning mentor team is made up of the following members of staff:

The learning mentors work with a wide variety of pupils for the reasons outlined in this page. Referrals can be made by Head's of year, Deputy Head Teachers (Pastoral), Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator(s), Teachers, Pupils Themselves and Parents.

Many people often ask what exactly is a learning mentor?
A learning mentor's role is to aim to increase success in schools by focusing on the needs of individual pupils.
Learning mentors can have an impact, not only on pupils, but also families, teachers and the way schools function as a whole.
Learning mentors are employed are employed to break down barriers to learning for young people. These barriers may be inside of school, outside of school or often both. The main targets of the mentors are as follows: |

- Raise achievement
- Improve behaviour
- Improve attendance
- Promote emotional well being

Learning mentors are NOT teachers, instead they aim specifically to improve academic achievement by increasing pupil's motivation. They can and do, provide support and guidance whether the issue is emotional, academic or of a social context.
A learning mentor can help to increase a pupils personal development and self-esteem by being:

- A positive role model
- An active listener
- A professional friend
- Reliable and supportive

How is this actually achieved?
A variety of approaches are used including:

- One-to-one interviews with pupils
- Action planning and target setting
- Liaising with outside agencies to benefit pupils
- Anger management techniques
- Monitoring attendance
- Home visits / working with parents
- Helping with organisational skills (homework and coursework scheduling)
- Supporting teachers by liasing with non-attending pupils to complete GCSE coursework or examinations
- Linking with schools Learning Support Units (LSU) and Special Educational Need's departments (SEN)
- Self-esteem excercises
- Transitional work with primary schools
